Everyone hopes that the weeks after giving birth are a joyful time.  The reality is that both mum and baby often need some support with settling their nervous systems.  This is significant to help your baby with feeding, sleep and most digestive issues such as reflux and colic.  If it was a very complicated birth process, it may be beneficial to gently support and release any remaining trauma for mum and baby’s emotional wellbeing.   As a registered homeopathic medicine practitioner and craniosacral therapist, I work with clients who benefit from such support to provide balance and alignment at this early stage, and well in to childhood.

How does therapy work?

Craniosacral Therapy is an extremely gentle but potent body work treatment, stemming from osteopathic principles.  Our central nervous system is like a computer influencing everything in the body.  In addition, our craniosacral system, which consists of soft tissues and cerebro spinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, is closely linked to this nervous system.   Following a challenging birth, for instance tension in the baby’s head after compression through the birth canal, the baby may be in a state of alert, impacting sleep.  As treatment is so gentle, it is ideal during pregnancy and post partum as well as all stages of life.   For babies with latching difficulties it may be due to palate misalignment affecting the suction tunnel. The way the baby is born may impact certain factors and CST can help to correct this.

Craniosacral therapy for either a mother or baby, involves the therapist applying their hands in a non invasive way, including gentle touch, to the head [cranium], hip area [sacrum], feet and back [spinal cord].  This mobilisation helps to enhance the body’s innate healing abilities and gently unwind patterns of stuckness.  A mother will feel more relaxed if her own nervous system is aligned and craniosacral treatment may provide emotional and physical support to create balance, helping to induce calmer feeding times.

How Homeopathy Can Give Support After birth?

Homeopathic medicine is the 2nd largest form of medicine globally, with more than 200million users worldwide.  Many parents have already used the homeopathic remedy Arnica Montana for mild ailments such as superficial bruises.  It is an ideal system of medicine for babies, children, and parents as well as during pregnancy.

After birth there are a number of remedies to incorporate into a wellbeing plan to support mother and baby.  Often, the remedy Aconite can be given to help calm the nervous system down following the ordeal of giving birth.

Homeopathy is an effective deep acting, natural system of healing, often used alongside other medicines as it does not interfere with other medicines or treatment.  It consists of tiny diluted doses of homeopathic medicine to stimulate the body’s inate ability to heal, enhancing improved wellbeing, greater alignment within the body and improved physical and emotional symptoms.

Following a consultation, Amal writes a prescription for remedies which are either in liquid, pill or granule form, for a client to purchase from a homeopathic pharmacy.  For post partum, this can include remedies for shock and trauma, pain relief, mild skin conditions and later for teething.  If you’d like to try either craniosacral therapy or homeopathy during or after your pregnancy, or for your baby, then do get in touch with Amal via Dulwich Therapy Rooms or Triyoga Chelsea.  Alternatively, get in touch with Amal cranial@amalremedy.co.uk  to book a free discovery call.
